[UK-CONTEST] Re the shortened callsigns, and License(!)

Afternoon one and all,
Nope, I will hang on to GU0SUP till the ends of time. It is far too well
known (well, it is in the RTTY world!) to have any desire to change it, and
I have got to quite like it. It also sounds OK in CW.
I guess many of us here have callsigns that were allocated by the system,
rather than these days where you can request pretty much any call you like.
Having the double letter prefix is enough of a challenge anyway, and any
shorter versions would probably elicit several di-di-dah-dah-di-dit's as to
the missing letters. My only gripe with my call is that sometimes the last
two letters can cause confusion when working someone operating split! (ie
gu0sUP)
Our club has MU2K, and I have to say that the MU prefix certainly seems to
cause a lot of confusion outside the UK. I get a lot of QSL cards for MU's
that have GU as the prefix on them, and having tried MU2K on CW, some folk
still seem to hear GU instead of MU, thinking they missed a dit.
I have just negotaited the Ofcom website for my own call, and note that the
actual wesbite to log in/register is shown as ..../licenSing/olc/ !!
The letter from Ofcom has BOTH spellings in the content of the letter! The
heading is YOUR NEW LIFETIME RADIO LICENCE, great so far, but then goes on
to suggest that I need to register on the "Ofcom licensing page" !
I guess they will use that old chestnut of "but I spell-checked it, and it
was OK".
So Colin, thanks for the info, and NO, I do not wish to change my call.
73 de Phil GU0SUP UP UP UP UP!
