Hmmm. We spent a fortune in time, effort and cash putting a team on top of a
1,000 hill for a whole weekend in the summer all for 250 QSOs across three
bands. Half of the QSOs were on 50Mhz and on 70cms, we scored less about 40
QSOs! A pointless event - even at 1,000 feet. This year, the team have
almost voted it off our calendar due to lack of fun.

SSB Field Day though was a completely different story. Same effort for 2,000
QSOs.

To encourage participants on VHF / UHF, I suggested a while ago that we
could make an "Omni / vertical antenna" category. This would encourage
participants since (almost) everyone has a 2m vertical somewhere on the
roof. Most modern Shack-in-the-box radios do 6, 2 and 70 (SSB) and with a
V2000 type tri-band vertical for £80, there's a three-band entry from the
house, all vertically polarised.

Let's give it a go, eh? Simple but effective - and could be great fun!
