[UK-CONTEST] Christmas VHF Cumulative contests start today

Thanks for the reminder Pete. Normally I wouldn't go near the radio on
Boxing Day but, with flu afflicting several members of the family, I found
myself with time on my hands in the afternoon.

My VHF set-up is rather basic - an FT847 into a vertical designed for 6m,
but it does seem to radiate on the other bands reasonably well, so I thought
I would have some fun. An hour into the contest I had worked one station on
6m and the same guy on 2m. There were a few other signals around from time
to time, but so weak as to be unidentifiable.

I know that I will be told that I need a horizontally-polarised beam for
real VHF work, but it all seems like Catch-22. You can't work much without
doing major antenna work, but major antenna work is not justified by the
levels of activity to be found.

Perhaps I'm in a particularly "quiet" area (Sussex) ...

Perhaps today will be better ...
