Hi Andy et al

Just my 2p worth - I have some tall Douglas Fir and Scots Pine trees here - 
they are probably the worst kind of tree to use for antenna supports (but 
still are useful) - this is because :

the support rope and/or wires snag easily on the cones or multitude of small 
prickly branches - these clever pine branches can tie knots in a rope !

in the longer term, the rope can 'stick' in the vee of a branch cos it 
becomes coated in resin

it's very difficult to get any weight to fall straight back down through the 
mass of branches - best to throw/fire the weight right over the top of the 
tree and hope for a strong branch near the top catching it.
