Chaps .. At the risk of doing this thread to death, here's my contribution.

Same as Robin 'TKF, I use a "Black Widow" Catapult.  Mine had a nice
illustration on the box of someone killing a rat with it ..or perhaps it was
a cat!  Better by far than those crappy little jobs sold in Angling shops.
 
I use a 3oz pear drop "lead" fishing weight and 20lb mono-filament sea-line.
It can reach up 90ft easily.  When it's (eventually!) over the correct
branch, I tie on some 50lb line and then add use that to pull over some 200
kg 4 mm dia "rope" from a marine chandlers.
