[UK-CONTEST] One mans point of view.

Frankly, as a new and unsophisticated contester, I think the
whole scene wants a major overhaul.

All forms of technology improve over the years and CW Skimmer will do the same,
eventually it will be SSB Skimmer as well.. If some wish to use it, let them go
in for an 'Unlimited' section, just so long as they can be identified if they
try to elbow their way into 'normal' contests. As I have said
before, contesting is becoming a 'Beargarden' particularly on
SSB mode. Power levels are unsportsman-like. I agree with Roger the
single op contest will always remain popular and is more 'sporty', and I
suspect most of the ‘reasonable’ contesters would feel similarly, that it is
about using ones natural skills!

I suppose we have to go with the new technologies, but
personally I'm all for Paper Logging and Straight Keys. AND 100W MAX. Better
still 10w Max. Let the anatennas do the work. (well I’m very sorry if you don’t
have a big antenna)

On a recent email one op said “can they copy CW at 30 – 40wpm
using plain language.”

If they have to repeat or QRS, for someone like me, two or
three times in a contest, they’ve lost any advantage.

It’s also very noticeable, that several good ops don’t use ‘silly
speed sending’ and still manage to make good scores, without repeats.Frankly, as a new and unsophisticated contester, I think the
whole scene wants a major overhaul to level the playing field. One more thing - we all know there is no satisfactory way of 'policing' power levels........except to go QRP.

Martin, GW3PRL.
