[UK-CONTEST] Vista

Hi Chris,

I have a laptop running Vista and have managed to get HRD, DX Lab and
other radio software applications working. Some applications seem to
require that the user account has administrator privileges. For
example, DXLab requires not only that the user is an administrator
but that I have to change the desktop shortcut to use
Runas...administrator. It may even be necessary to create a specific
user named "Administrator".
If you Google Vista forums you should be able to find the steps. Some
users even go so far as to disable UAC. I haven't had to that.

The other thing I get are BSODs from time to time. Make sure you have
Vista SP1 installed. That helped. But I still get them using USB
serial devices based on the Prolific chip. My laptop had no serial
ports, and that's becoming increasingly common. I use a USB to 4
serial port adapter for controlling 2 radios, a rotator, and Winkey.
But if I use all 4 ports concurrently, there's a good chance of a
BSOD. MS blames anti-virus software, but I could reproduce the same
thing with no anti-virus, and 2 different ones installed. Seems
unlikely. More likely a buggy driver, but I have the latest version
according to MS.

There are some nice things about Vista - system backup and restore for example.
Good luck,
