I think that sort of power level is more common in some parts of Eastern
European, but I'm not denying there are a few 'California kilowatts'
around the US!! I've heard the stories about certain stations in the US
generating corona on the ends of antenna elements.....
Having operated a few times from W3LPL I know that sort of high power is
certainly not the case at Franks QTH (and he is one of the louder US
stations in Europe). W3LPL uses six homebrew, single band, single
3-1000Z amps with, I believe, 4.5kV on the plate. Given the age of the
valves 15+(?) years (so they probably have 100 contests under their
belt) and the length of some of the feedlines (500ft?), he's probably
not even getting close to the legal 1500W at the antenna on the higher
bands..... but he does have the hardware in the air to compensate :)
It's not always power that makes some of them loud!
See you all in nine days in CQWW CW..... I'll be operating either 80 or
160M at W3LPL.
