I wasn't thinking of nets like the one run by the Horsham club & I'm sure
that you're correct that there are others like it however there are also
plenty where 'outsiders' aren't welcome but there again why would anyone
want to join some of these nets which are usually made up of a lot of boring
old xxxx's!  On the other hand there are some rules of etiquette which I
once read which newcomers (and also some who are not so new) might wish to
consider. It went something like 'if two or more stations are in QSO don't
call in unless you either know one or more of the stations or have some
relevant information to impart (someone has asked a question which you can
answer even then you might not be made welcome as happened to me on one
occasion) or it's an open net where the net controller invites others to
join. Otherwise wait until the QSO/net has finished before calling (you
might have a long wait)'.  I've had someone call in when I've been in QSO
with a friend in the middle of discussing some technical matter when a
stranger calls in for no particular reason, perhaps it's a CB thing.
Of course there are always exceptions  - 'I'm on a boat which is sinking'
would be a good example!  I should admit that I'm not a big fan of nets but
do very occasionally call into a couple on 80m but you would have to be (un)
lucky to catch me!
