The RSGB Bulletin for August 1948 carried the following:

"Danish VHF Activity

Details of the VHF Field Day organised by EDR .... Two meter activity is 
likely ... probably concentrated in the contest hours... During the contest 
the Danish stations will be operating an auxiliary net on 3,725 kc/s for 
exchange of information and arrangement of schedules "

Even that long ago !!!

BTW my very first VHF QSO (on 144) was on 11th August 1955 - with G5UM of 
course.  Who else.
