FT-450 is not that bad. I presume we talk about LF bands, specially 40m.
Make sure your pal has IPO enabled and 20dB ATT as that will bypass that silly preamp which goes all the way from 600kHz to 60MHz.
I had similar issue with FT857D I am still using and I never switched preamp back on (by default setting it is on)

Hope that might help, if not I hope it wont make harm :)

Hi List

I'm trying to help an ex-pat in EA5 who has an FT450 which is getting 
blown away by IMD from the QRO stations in I , 9A etc. Yeah, I know, 
what did he expect from such a c*** rig, but he had to carry it over on 
a plane so anything more was impractical. He thinks that a firmware 
upgrade might provide some benefit, which I frankly doubt, but I must 
try to help him. I can see various references to such upgrades, but 
can't see the source on the Yaesu UK or USA sites, which are just 
marketing vehicles afaics. Is there some other site I could look perhaps?
