Thanks Jin, and to all others who replied privately. I agree that the 
figures are not that bad, and paradoxically better than the FT2000, but 
then that rig has an unenviable reputation :-(

I will QSP your reccos, but the bloke in question is a very experienced 
amateur, so imagine he's already been there. He used to live about 500 
yards from me and his F1000MP didn't flinch at my 400w of CW, ditto my 
756PRO3 with his 400w! I guess he is  just noticing the difference.
