I had the same problem , and I now use a circuit which Dave G4BUO uses.  It 
is simple and negates the use of a relay although the latter is the final 
method.

>From the Ant- through a P bulb to a .1 MicroF and a 33 ohm resistor (All in 
series) to the RX ant input, and at the RX input there are two banks of four 
IN914 diodes (One bank -cathodes to the RX input and the other bank -anodes 
to the RX ant.   You can see the RF with the bulb -maybe light up the shack
