Very similar experience here in Sussex Malcolm - quite a struggle!  The band 
was full of strong Spanish and east EU accents before the off, so skip (as 
we might expect) was quite long.  No explanation though for the small 
handful of good G signals (Nigel TXF and Andy SVD of the non-locals stood 
out here).
