Nick
That's a long time ago. I think that you and I (plus quite a few others on
that list) are more than eligible for RAOTA membership!
BTW, if I worked you with SSB in 1978, it would have been from a mate's QTH.
All I had from home in those days was a Codar AT5 (CW only and a bit of AM)
and an ancient B40 receiver. I also had a Katsumi electronic keyer which,
when it got a bit warm in the summer months, used to go haywire with speed
and dot/dash ratio. So, I used to have keep my keyer in the fridge overnight
because of this. I bet no one else has a stranger story.......?

Subject: [UK-CONTEST] AFS SSB - Not much hope
Nigel, G3TXF, has discussed the "typing up" of paper logs recently in the
CDXC journal.
Thankfully I did this some time ago and it wasn't a massive task because in
my teenage
years, I didn't have a lot of contacts and didn't know much about contests
or other
activities that rack up the numbers.
Anyway, I have just fewer than 1,500 QSOs logged before 1979.
I entered AFS SSB on Saturday for the first time, with marginally over 200
Qs; then I
amused myself by comparing the calls with those that are in my log for
before 1979.
Incidentally, 160m would have been using a Codar AT5 until I got a KW Vespa
(not a scooter).
The full list of matching calls with first QSO is:
Call First QSO Freq Mode
G4BXT 11/05/1976 1.8 A3E (QSO no#20)
G3ZBU 11/07/1976 1.8 A3E
G4FAM 18/08/1976 144 F3E (GM4FAM on Sat)
G4CWH 22/08/1976 1.8 A3E
G4ERW 12/12/1976 1.8 J3E
G3VER 12/12/1976 1.8 J3E (only previous QSO)
G8JXV 11/05/1977 144 F3E (only previous QSO)
G3MXH 12/12/1977 144 F3E
G3SSO 19/02/1978 3.5 J3E (only previous QSO)
G4FNL 23/03/1978 3.5 J3E
G3SWC 30/06/1978 144 F3E
Nice that three of these were only my second contact in more than 30 years.
I mentioned this to my wife (foolishly?) whose instant reply was "not much
hope of you
getting fed up with it then".
