You'd be surprised at what we can forget to take to site. Yes, locator maps
were available, but not at kick-off. One of the biggest pressures of VHF NFD
is being absolutely ready on all bands at 14.00. We just about got that
right this time, but that inevitably means a compromise on the antenna
front. There simply isn't time to put up the metalwork that we would like.
I've also known contests where the IT department isn't ready for the start,
so we begin logging on paper. Catching up with that during a busy contest is
tedious.
I think the "best" forgetfulness on a contest was long ago. The tent was
laid out flat on the ground, ready to go up. Everyone looked at everyone
else and said "I thought you were bringing the tent frame".

All very true but I would be amazed if there was not a locator map
sitting right in front of the operator. It's an
essential tool!
I accept that some respected HF operators might find VHF/UHF contesting
a bit too complicated though. Although
it has many similarities to HF, its mastery requires learning some
additional/different skills.
