I think that most beginners would be very disappointed if they 
participated in a Backpackers event unless they were situated from 
somewhere in the middle of the country. Last year in the 4th 2m 
Backpackers event I managed just 7 QSO's from IO70 near Newquay.
At least there wasn't any local QRM, apart from one other station in 
Cornwall the next nearest station was in EI. I suppose that this is a 
chicken & egg situation, few stations in the rest of the country ever 
turn their beams to the west which means that few stations in Devon & 
Cornwall bother to come on the band.
I'll be down that way again this weekend, the question is whether to 
operate in the Backpackers or LP FD, not really a hard choice to make 
after last year.
I remember that my introduction to contesting (many years ago!) was 
taking part in Top Band contests, whatever happened to Top Band? It's 
much easier to get on with an effective signal than 2m, it's a pity that 
"Foundation" licensees weren't restricted to this band & perhaps VHF & 
above.
