It is reasonable for a newcomer like David to ask such a question, but 
I'm shocked at the number of experienced operators who seem to have no 
better answer than "This way is right and your way is wrong!"

Come on folks - we all know (or for heaven's sake, we all *should* know) 
that there isn't one universal set of requirements for a minimum valid 
QSO.  Standard practice on HF is different from the standard practice on 
VHF and above. Those differences are reflected in the contest rules 
applying to the respective bands.

Each system has both advantages and drawbacks... but that isn't the 
point. The point is to follow the way things are done on the band you're 
using.
