[UK-CONTEST] A 'valid QSO'

Hello UK-contesters

Thanks to everyone for the QSOs with ZK2V - propagation to Europe was not
good, but quite a few UK stations are in the log on various bands and
modes. Some of the signals from the UK over the North Pole and on the long
path were strong.

It is interesting to read this reflector when your ability to reply is
limited - without wishing to restart an old thread, I was flattered to be
quoted on here regarding the sending of both callsigns in a 'proper contest
exchange' - however this quote was probably referring to some completely
outdated 70MHz contesting from the 1980's.

I would suggest that an up-to-date interpretation of what constitutes a
'valid QSO' is that when the QSO is over, both parties (a) know who they
have worked and (b) have logged the other callsign (+ any other necessary
exchange info) correctly. Discounting Sprint contests, this end result is
usually achieved without the calling station giving both callsigns and
without the running station having to give the calling station's callsign
more than once (unless there is a correction, which then makes it essential
for the running station to send the calling station's corrected call)

If anyone is interested, I have posted some examples on this webpage :
www.qsl.net/gm3woj/exchanges1.htm

BTW, in the IARU contest this year the new ZL6HQ callsign will be used by
NZART, but maybe only on CW.
