"I am heartily fed up with the suggestion that the committee should pander
to those operators who wish to win something with their FT-290 and a Slim
Jim. They should get off their backside and make an investment, either in
equipping the home station more competitively, or by joining or forming a
contest group and going /P."
I am intrigued by this. M0MCX's suggestion was that there was a VERTICAL
antenna category for VHF/UHF contest. I saw nothing about FM or any mention
of FT-290s. As I understand it, the rules usually state "All Modes" if the
contest is a phone one anyway and FM is allowable.
The point Callum was making, and I believe it is a very good one, is that
there are many stations who are VHF/UHF equipped but ONLY with vertical
colinears and radios like the TS-2000 (100w on 2m). Many stations do not
want/need (or cannot physically erect) more than this for their day-to-day
VHF and up usage.
Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to have sections in many contests for
people like this - it should not upset the rest of the contesting community
(unless by that, we mean large stations had better be equipped for 2 types
of polarisation instead of one!)
The upshot might well be that these people with vertical antenna see how
much fun contesting is and later decide to upgrade their stations, at
considerable time and expense!
The quote above appears, at best, to have been written in haste, as it
appears to slag some fellow hams off because they don't want to do things
the way the writer wants them to.
Now what was that saying about toys and a pram???
