I'm an HF specialist, but I don't think that VHF is too different here. 
There will always be unique calls in contest logs and the vast majority of 
them are perfectly OK.  What I believe you are referring to is the practice 
of stations coming on to work only their mate/relative/club members, even 
though they are capable of making many more contacts.  This tends to be 
regarded as being 'not within the Spirit of the contest' which is, usually, 
to get as many QSOs as you can.

If all you have is 2m FM you aren't going to get a lot of contest QSOs, 
unless our attitudes and practices change!  There's nothing in the rules to 
say you can't use FM.  Perhaps the reason why Ray's FM contacts didn't work 
anyone else was just because no-one else asked them!  From what Ray says 
they moved to his channel as the result of his broadcast calls.  If they 
were willing to work him, why not someone else?  Ray appears to have 
legitimately plundered a hitherto untapped source of contacts (and good luck

to him IMPO!) while at the same time doing a bit of community relations 
work!

The Contest Committee server has been down for maintenance today so we 
haven't had a chance to discuss things;  however, I'm sure there will be 
more comment once our reflector is working again!

BTW, had an enjoyable contest myself despite massive domestic commitments - 
didn't fill the six hours but managed GM, GD, GW and PA0 from my cr**py, 
<100ft asl site in South London, 'til I had to drop the tower because of the

high winds.  Believe I was the only station on in CR so sorry we didn't meet

up - would have been a new mult for you, HI!
