I recall taking a G400 apart many years ago and rebuilding, the only thing
that 
I seem to remember was that there is a mechanical end stop in the rotator, a

metal arm or some such, and that the pot has a little more turn in it than
that. 
Set to the mechanical end stop, and then set the pot past this point. The
fine 
adjustment of the display needle is done in the controller with two twiddle
pots.
