It's good to read some reports from the UKAC contest.
For the first time, we put in two entries for our club this month,
this was due to the fact that I couldn't be out late so I decided to
get the guys going at the club, head home and then run from here. It's
the first time I've not operated the first half hour at the club myself.
If there is an award for "Worked all JO01 square" then I think I
qualify for it!
The guys at the tower commented that it all seemed to go very well,
there was a decent amount of activity and they picked up a lot of
multipliers whereas I at home didn't have a very good evening. I
suffered from very heavy QSB and lost two QSOs because of it - One of
them would have been a new GM square for me but I wasn't able to get
the last two letters of his locator nor my serial number.
Looking at the QSO maps, we seemed to be well down on stations to the
South West, there were a lot of gaps which normally have contacts in
them and despite being right on the coast there were very few
Europeans around. I worked Frank PE1EWR as usual but he was only one
of two from mainland Europe in the log, the rest were all from the UK.
There was one instance of someone appearing on a qrg very close to
mine and calling CQ without even asking but a quick "This frequency is
in use, old man" and he apologised and moved straight away.
