Jan's ADSL 160m filter might benefit from a couple of varistors between the line input and ground (PC chassis). Having lost several modems due to lightning static on the phone lines, I made up a simple transient suppressor and have lost none since. I used fairly beefy Farnell 752-575 varistors rated at 300V; 8,000 Amps peak; 173 Joules.
