I'm inclined to agree with you about the reasons for the response Jim.

So K = Clicks?  If I receive 59K that means I am R5, S9 and have key clicks?

Actually I think Yaesu have some responsibility.  For an  extended 
period, they carried on producing FT1000 series models with known key 
click problems and never seemed to do much about the design flaw.
