I'm not sure that this is the case, Ken. Perhaps in some parts of the UK,
but almost certainly not in the regions where there are few clubs and even
fewer contest groups. Also, experience as a club contest operator might not
actually be very worthwhile experience, depending on the quality of the club
operators who are regarded as 'good contest operators' and therefore seen as
role models for newer ops. This can also be the case with special-event
stations, which in my experience seem to often be staffed by very poor
operators.
Probably many of today's experienced operators gained their experience as
single-op entries in contests, eventually being invited (or not!) to join a
contest group. Whatever the reasons, the CC and AFS events do seem to be
encouraging new operators to participate, which is good.
