[UK-CONTEST] Ethics & Financial restraints?

Ken..
Just because few people comment it doesn't necessarily mean that they agree
with you! It could be that possibly they don’t want to get into a tedious
discussion about level playing fields.

Having said that, I don't really care how the results are presented. I just
like to be active. What ever the original purpose of the CC's, they
certainly generate a great deal of participation. They have prompted me to
continually improve my set-up and to use modes that were new to me. I also
note that the standard of contest operating, in these events, is gradually
improving.
Furthermore, the activity levels suggest that there is no evidence that
others are being discouraged by the participation of contest groups.

I don’t follow your logic re. financial resources. I would have thought that
"local club" members are no different to "contest group" members in this
respect. I know many non-contesting hams with shacks that are bulging with
expensive equipment that I could never afford. Are you suggesting that
there should be some kind of "means tested" category? I do pretty well in
the 80M contests because I have a really tall tree to the side of my garden.
Perhaps there should be a “tree category”. Or perhaps there should be an
“age category”.

I guess it comes down to an attitude of mind. Some people want to adjust
the rules to handicap the performance of others and others want to improve
their own performance.

Must dash ..I think there is a chopper coming into land on my level playing
field.

I'm pleased that none of the major 'Contest Group' players appear to
have objected
to my suggestion that the small groups of top operators who come
together solely for
the purpose of entering contests should be classified separately from
local clubs who draw
their contest teams from within their membership, the results speak for
themselves.
I expect that most top operators first gain experience as club contest
operator and not as part
of a C.G. which consists only of experienced operators. Rather than
encouraging new operators
to contesting C.G.'s may well discourage operators of club entries who
find that they can't compete
with these groups of very experienced operators.

I very much doubt that all amateurs have the same financial restraints,
this is one of the beauties
of the hobby, there are amateurs who live in areas where there are
swimming pools, tennis courts
& helipads in the back 'gardens' & others who live in 'two up two down'
cottages.
There are plenty of amateurs using equipment costing many £k's and
others whose entire station is
probably only worth a few hundred pounds. Assuming equal antennas (which
of course is determined
by the size of garden & maybe value of the property) if the second chap
is a good operator he may
well do better than the first, however if someone has spent £k's on an
amplifier which enables him to
run considerably more than the legal power limit as some people have
suggested that's another matter
and one which the HFCC should consider as grounds for disqualification.
