They certainly were "of a time", along with the NAG144XL. They were
responsible for a lot of struggle and strife during VHF contests back in
the seventies and eighties.
But then in their own way they also contributed to the learning of how
to do it right. Articles by John FRX and things like the SEK psu control
boards had us scrambling for the soldering iron to make these POS amps
half decent.
I don't think anyone ever made one "safe" ;-)
