You are quiet correct there is normally a circlip tight up to the  
bearing hidden in grease. The snag is that you may well have to remove  
the drive bearing from it's case to move the rotor far enough to be  
able to release the bearing. Idea situation would be to remove the  
motor completely then the end caps. There might be a screwed end cover  
on the bearing 3 screws on the outside. Played with many over the years.
