Indeed, the 20m height is only for "Field Day" (CW).
SSB FD though states:
1. Sections: All sections are multi-operator. This is a portable contest as
defined in General Rule 6.
(a) Open Section. Full licensed power. There is no restriction on the
number, height or type of antennas.

Neil,
I suspect (and hope!) that Callum is thinking about antennas for SSB FD
where there is no height limit in the Open section.
Regarding David G3YYD's narrow peninsular - that describes my J8 QTH!
Our UK FD Site has such a steep drop on the West side only - just a
gentle downward slope to the East. I am sure the former accounts for the
high number of W's we work on SSB FD.
