My attempts to have a bash in the SSB CC when I first got my K2 working 
on that mode ended in failure - 3 QSOs in 30 minutes before I abandoned 
the idea, and I have never done another SSB session since; microphone 
remains disconnected from rig on the shelf. QRP SSB is a waste of time 
in these events - but as you say, there does seem to be people around 
who are able to manage it...
