[UK-CONTEST] Win7 to LINUX

Sadly not Neil

Andy is quite right with his comments, and I flirted with CQR log a
couple of years back, but it was way off the pace.

Of course N1MM is a very hard act indeed to follow, and benefits from
years of development by clever programmers ( not just N1MM himself of
course ), as well as support and documentation teams.

If one rewinds a few years TRlog was the granddaddy of them all and
pioneered " ESM " which I wouldn't get out of bed without. Sadly this
was written in Pascal , and Tree was unbale to make the jump to a
Windows friendly language, and therefore the advent of Win XP sadly
sounded its death knell. Several clever programmers like our own G4FON
dallied with the porting of TR to e.g. C++, but in reality it just never
happened. The Russians have, I believe, ported it to that language but
the last time I looked the support was only available in Russian (
caveat there is now said to be an active English language forum but.....).

Coming full circle, N1MM is written in Visual Basic ( and none the worse
for that btw ) and as Andy has pointed out does not run well under Wine.
Operation under a Mac OS is said to be possible, but is not popular.
Despite the fact that VB has a very limited life remaining, the authors
seem convinced that it can continue to be compiled to x86 code for the
foreseeable future; we must hope thaqt they are right.

We are therefore dependent upon OK1RR, OK2CQR at al to make the leap to
Linux, and I for one anticipate that development with eagerness,
although refrain from holding my breath!

The lack of a competent contest logger is the one thing that prevents me
from moving wholesale to Linux.

That said Win7 is a step change in the Windows environment, and nobody
should be afraid of making the change. ( caveat MK2R users have to
suffer extremely long virtual port booting which is a PITA )
