Hello Stewart,
I think you are correct about computer noise (and other urban crud), I can 
easily work M0DTS on 1296 from home using an indoor antenna but can't do a 
two way on 144 - he hears me fine but I can't hear him. The difference is 
I'm in and urban area, he is in a rural area.

Out /P is a different world, not just from a height perspective but the 
noise is virtually gone. I hear stations with nothing on the s meter and 
work them with ease - if they can hear me above their noise floor.
Like yourself I do have problems with some strong stations who are deaf or 
drowned out by their local noise. Some of the regular guys have very good 
ears which match their transmit capabilities but so many more do not.

I'm always surprised when I see the results or claimed scores pages - who 
are the guys who have big QSO numbers that I haven't heard all through the 
contest? That's the other problem!
