Regarding the vertical dipoles, I was pleased with my results in IOTA two
years ago from EU-080 where I used vertical end fed half waves. This
resolved the problem of feeding half way up the vertical with coax. The 20m
EFHW was fed at its base, a few feet above the sand with a small
counterpoise of 2ft. A small toroid and variable capacitor made up the
tuning unit and I had tested the whole thing with 100w for several minutes
with no noticeable increase in temperature.
I was placed in the top ten in my section and would have been very much
closer to the top but for the mistake of not bothering with an 80m antenna
thus losing out on many mults. Mults are everything in this contest!
