Ray,
Propagation via reflections from aircraft is not limited to 70cm & above
as I'm sure you realize.
I can hear GB3ANG beacons on 2 & 4m virtually the whole time regardless
of 'tropo' conditions (as I type this 'ANG is 1-2 S points above noise
in a 500Hz BW). Last year when airliers were grounded due the 'ash' from
the TF volcano I took the opportunity to monitor the signals from GB3ABG
on 4 & 2m. For most of this period the beacon signals were either
completely inaudible or occasionally audible right down in the noise.
Once airline flights resumed the beacon signals returned to their normal
strengths.
Virtual radar shows that for most of the time there are many aircraft in
the sector to the west of Manchester, just nicely placed midway between
my QTH & Dundee. Not surprising that this works, Watson-Watt wouldn't be
surprised but he didn't have lots of aircraft at FL370 & above to play
with. It makes me think that a lot of VHF QSO's rely on this mode of
propagation.

> Much of the content from the memory stick is retained for club talks I do but aircraft reflection appears to be to the most popular personal request.
> I have therefore added a page to my website on the operational side of the subject and trust those interested will find it useful.
