This is becoming a bit of a 'fisherman's tale'.....
I didn't think the speeds were generally too bad, so I've just spent a few minutes on reversebeacon.net looking at some of the calls in my log as well as my own. I stuck at 27-29wpm the whole time and with one exception the others I checked were 26-34wpm. UT0RM spent most of the time around 35 but occasionally shot up to 45! Maybe he was filling in for the absent CT1ILT..?
The RBN doesn't go right back to the first half of the contest but there was no general slowing down during the course of the 4 hours.

BTW - The RBN in my experience is *very* accurate at reporting keying speeds
