I totally agree with you Stewart. It's intelligent operating to vary the message speed occasionally. If there are no punters at high speed there may
be some at a lower speed. I guess big contests like CQWW are different in that activity levels are so high there are always callers.
As with the speeding up rubbish, continuous high speed sending seems to eminate from eastern Europe. I think there are two reasons contributing to
this 1) There are far more CW operators in those countries so Q/H rates are higher and more sustainable and 2) They are more competent at sending and
receiving at high speed. I think many of those countries still have compulsory military service. If you listen to the short Russian WSEM contests the
speed and rates are very high. I once called EF8M (I think) being operated by one of the top Russians. He had no problem in getting my callsign at
around 50 wpm.
By the way, I initially chickened out calling HG1S on Saturday evening as I also had difficulty in deciding if it was HG1S or SG1S!!! Later I decided
it was HG1S as that is a regular contest callsign!
