For some reason, I never even saw the 'real' poll, I just happened upon a response, but couldn't find the original mail and by the time I realised how important it was, it was too late :-(

We are where we are, at least lets try this for a while, the moderators of the Yahoo groups will be able to see if lots of people leave the group and will need to react accordingly (so I urge you all to join so they can determine that).

In, say a years time, there can be another poll on both groups, done via Yahoos poll system and it can ask if people want to stay separate or combine the two (it should be possible to rename the group without having to ask everyone to rejoin).

As noted, there is a 3rd group (http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/ukcontesting), with 28 members so far, HF has 147 & VHF has 96 - but I'm sure there are dups among those.
