Which (cost) is pretty much the nub of the problem (having been at the
sharp end of this one in years gone by). A venue where there are good
quality lecture theatres for, say, two streams of 200-300 each (assuming an
overall attendance of 500 or so, which is what it seems to have reached),
plus overnight accommodation. Universities are great for the former
(outside term time), hotels usually only have "meeting rooms" with
insufficient capacity for anything other than business-style meetings
(maybe one large room, but no more). But university accommodation is
generally considered below par by many attendees, especially those looking
for double rooms!

I know the RSGB is well aware of the need, yet again, to move on (every
previous move, from the Belfry near Oxford back in the 80s, has been the
result of increased charges or shortage of space). Will be interesting to
see what they find but, yes, many day visitors even moan about the few
pounds of the day rate, never mind the cost of meals, drinks or overnight
rooms! The event has to cover its costs - it's not appropriate that the
rest of the membership should pick up any shortfall.
