Great to have another good year with 10m nicely open for CQWW. Mine was a
part-time entry with several long stints in between various other weekend
jobs and visitors. Last year (assisted SOSB 10 HP) I had 10 hours of
operating with 550 QSOs and 120 mults+ 35 zones.
This year I found the mults much tougher to uncover (no cluster used) and I
was disappointed to find I had fewer mults than last year despite operating
for an extra 4 hours! I guess it was either better conditions last year or
it is just the difference the cluster makes? But, on a more positive note, I
increased my QSO total by over 300 and hence a much increased overall score
this year. Although the path to the east was open on both mornings, I found
it hard to dig out the rare mults through the phenomenal level of activity
in E. Europe and Russia. No runs to JA at all, which I did manage last year.
Excellent opening on Sat to W/VE including lots of W coast, not quite so
good on Sun and the band faded early. Next year if 10m is still open, I
might put up a single band yagi because I think the hexbeam (although a good
5 band antenna) is quite limited in performance on 10m. I could tell when I
was spotted on the cluster- my rate suddenly shot up to 350+/h for a few
minutes but then rapidly declined!
Biggest challenge was trying to pick out (I think) SX100SKG against some
vicious QRM- 'X-Ray 'and 'Echo' easily confused so it could have been
either- and there were several other calls like this which bring a real
challenge in contests.
Excellent contest, most enjoyable. Like G3TXF I submitted my log on Sunday
evening well before the contest officially ended. My resolution for next
year is to be more organised and clear the weekend so that I can have a
full-time effort- unfortunately more easily said than done I suspect...
