Darrel, it's a matter of reading and understanding the situation. There isn't an entry category in IARU Region 1 SSB Field Day, for fixed stations so it is reasonable to assume that any fixed European stations calling CQ Contest would be looking for AA Qs. There was a few looking for FD Qs but usually they announced that.
At G3SJJ/P we always called an Eu - AA station if it was a multiplier, asking " Can we have a QSO for Field Day multiplier please, G3SJJ/P." Most would respond positively.
We always called Asian stations since a QSO would be EU to AS and therefore OK. We agreed on 61 as our mean age, which is quite close to the real figure! Me 67 and Dave ZQH 57. We logged whatever number they gave us.
One amusing incident was hearing an Asian station
saying "No portables" and in doing so robbed himself of many QSOs!!

I'd forgotten that SSB Field Day coincided with the All Asia contest. Higher
band condx were such that most of the stations on 15m and 10m were working
AA and not FD.
We worked a few stations who would give out a serial number, even though
they were in AA, but some stations were calling "CQ contest" then seemed
flabbergasted/annoyed when we called them asking for a FD serial (we're not
mind-readers, how were we to know they were in AA?).
What's the
combined wisdom of the group regarding working stations in the AA
contest during FD? Must admit we tried to keep away from the AA stations,
but a few were too tempting, will we lose points for those we worked, who
gave us their age rather than a sequential serial no?
