[VHFcontesting] Re: Icom vs. Yaesu question

Normal CW is LSB on the rig because that's the way it is on HF and the
rig is a HF rig with the VHF/UHF added into it as an afterthought/bonus
to compete with the other HF+6M rigs. No big deal; at least it has the
provision for switching to CW-R instead of forcing you to work around
it. You've also got the ability to shift the tone to your liking (I
prefer my sidetone to match the frequency shift of the rig) unlike my
IC-575A that has a 700 Hz tone with a 1kHz offset! I learned to
zero-beat by tuning until the tones harmonize; can't do that with a rig
where the tones don't match.

I have just purchased one of the 706MkIIG rigs myself and am looking at
the steep learning curve that's ahead of me to make really good use of
the radio. It is quite a capable rig (wish I could say the same for the
operator) and appears to be a bit easier to work with than I first
thought it would be. I'm using the manual to get to certain spots in
the menus and then setting it aside and trying out the options to find
out how they really work; the manual left me a bit confused on more than
a few things.

I have an all-Icom home station (IC-735, 575A, 275H & 475H with the
575's 10M capabilities used for the 220 xverter), so I expected the rig
to fall more or less in line with what I'm used to. It does on some
stuff, but it's apparently miles ahead on other features (DSP, CW ease
of use {compared to the x75 series}, adjustability of functions,
built-in keyer). I think I'll really like it once it's installed and
operational in the vehicle (I've only been playing with it on the bench
with PS so far). It sure does work well with the LDG AT-11MP for the
auto-tune function (at least on HF); I need to check & see if it will do
the 6M antenna as well. They (LDG) sell a remote tuner that does cover
six, so maybe it will as well...

Maybe it'll be ready for a simple rover attempt in September?
