John; yep, had the same problem.
Short history; I live in an apartment complex with power lines all
around the place. My FT100d was seeing s5-7 in various band segments on
HF, so I geared up for a major RFI search. Bought toroids, books etc.
The bottom line is diode noise. I have battery chargers all over the
place; you know, Sears portable drill, VHF rigs etc. When I
disconnected all that junk my noise level dropped to s0-1, I could
actually hear stuff on 40m.
