Please note the following new and updated items
available at the SMC VHF web-page.
“Early Contacts” is a new article written on the
historical development of all VHF / UHF / SHF bands.
The earliest activity levels on each band are noted,
and the first reported contest QSO’s are identified.
The article contains many other interesting facets of
early VHF band activity, as well. There are so many
historical tidbits of information that the document
runs close to 30 pages in length! The article can be
found at:

“The Role of the Clubs” is also a new article
exploring the impact that VHF clubs have had on VHF
contesting activity. There are some interesting
graphs and thoughts in the article. For instance, did
you know that 50% of all log entries have been
generated in recent contests by the clubs? Or that
club members have produced well over 60 to 70% of all
contest points in some events? The article was first
published in the Mt. Airy Cheese Bits earlier this
past month, and has now also been published in the SMC
Black Hole. It is located at:
http://www.w9smc.com/blackhole/news0604.pdf

Also, I have now extensively updated the “Other
Impacts” reference document initially written last
year. The latest revisions include numerous
statistical and historical observations on VHF contest
activity levels. It extensively documents past rules
revisions, regulatory changes, and lays the groundwork
for a detailed statistical analysis of VHF contest log
entries. It can be found at:
http://www.w9smc.com/SMC%20VHF/OtherImpactsarticle.pdf

Lastly, I have also updated the “VHF Historical Data
File.” This document now contains log entry totals on
all six ARRL VHF contests for all years. It also
contains some operator category log entry data, and
has complete data on the club competition for all
three of the major VHF contests. Additionally, the
file lists sources of data and information. This file
is used as the data source for statistical regressions
used in the above noted articles. It is at:
http://www.w9smc.com/SMC%20VHF/uvhfdata.pdf
I hope you enjoy the articles.
