[VHFcontesting] inverters

I BUILT THAT! That is just too funny. It was in an old Popular Science
decades ago. Loud as heck, especially since I used an old engine from a weed
whacker.

You need a regulator and some other stuff to make it work.

Overall, I will stick with my $100 750 watt generator and the nice 110VAC
power supply from DC Ace. It works for me, period. Inverters are nice, but
to get it to work you really need to separate it from the radios, mine is in
the front of the van and a power cable goes to the back. I needed the
separation to keep the hash out of the radios! When I got the generator it
was just, well, heaven.

I also built a cool generator trailer, if anyone want a pic of it, with the
two antenna masts on it, let me know and I will put it on the web someplace.

There was an article in one of the ham magazines within the last decade on
how to build a 12 VDC generator using an automobile alternator and a small
engine (such as a lawn mower engine).

It looked like something that can easily be built from "junk" parts and
would power a small station pretty easily. Probably very clean DC output
but maybe noisy sound-wise. I haven't built it yet but might give it a
try. It would definitely handle my QRP-portable operations.
