John,
I think the key to your question lies with the fact that the FT990 doesn't
have a
transmit command via serial ( I sold mine so can't verify, but believe this
is true ).
So, you need to fabricate an interface from either the COM port or the LPT,
( I would use COM as you already use that prot ) to connect to the radio
PTT and CW Key lines. This will consist of a couple of transistors and
resistors.
I have a nasty habit of buiilding but not documenting, but if you need more
