[WriteLog] W5XD+ keyer function Left v right

Hi Dick,

I don' think you are too far off base about the keyer. I use a W5XD keyer
also (built from parts). It has worked fine for SO NO 2R with the Left R
default. However, I have noticed when I upgraded to 10.28D something new.
When setting up for CW with radio Left selected AND activated and when
starting to send for the first time after a WL start, the screen would
really flicker for a moment but no output on CW Left keying line. Moving
the CW keying connection to the Right output solved the problem EVEN IF the
software was in Left mode.

Doing a save configuration seems to resolve the problem. I suspect your
keyer is OK, but WL 10.28D may have a minor issue.

I also noticed that PTT is asserted over the serial line regardless of L/R
status on the only rig attached in that manner IF only one radio is
specified as part of the setup. Not that this really matters. I do suspect
that there may be a gremlin associated with keyer initialization. This new
feature was observed using both WIN98 and now XP. Again, it seems to
resolve after doing a Save Configuration. Left then works as expected. As
far as I know, Right orientation is the default setting. I use Left since
my rig (an ICOM 756 PRO II) sits to the left side of my operating position.

BTW, WIN XP works fine so far versus WIN 98. I did have some trouble
getting my multi-serial port card from ByteRunner to work, but they offer an
alternative driver which seems to be FB. Lastly, as perhaps a dinosaur, I
use a TR-3 tape backup. This requires a third party program to see the drive
since XP does not support it directly (as far as I can tell).

Your mileage may vary.

CU in CQWW !!

I didn't think I was flaming anyone. I'm not upset or trying to upset other
people, I'm trying to understand why my hardware/software doesn't work as I
expected it to. I'm troubleshooting, and I'm asking for help. Since it's a
manufactured product, I may have to send it back for repair or replacement.
I need to do that in a reasonable amount of time if I expect any help from
the manufacturer.

I understand that with a single radio you must choose Left or Right. I
chose Left. It didn't work. When I chose Right things work fine. I don't
understand why Left didn't work. The problem could be that the Multi-Keyer
with Writelog never works for anyone as a single radio connected as the Left
rig. I really hope that's the case, and it's something that will eventually
be changed in a future Writelog software version. I looked for e-mail that
had that sort of problem and eventually found some that hinted at this. Or
the problem could be that it's supposed to work in single-radio mode as
either Left or Right. If that's the case, then maybe my MultiKeyer won't
work as a 2-radio multikeyer. I know other people have had success with
their multikeyers in SO2R setups. I believe that most multikeyers work
fine. I'm worried only about mine, not all of them.

My question then becomes do most people succeed in single radio mode with
Radio Left? And if it's widely known that you must always hook up a single
radio as radio right, shouldn't that information be widely known? I looked
for this sort of information through the help screens and web pages about
the Multi-Keyer and didn't find any mention of "single radio, use radio
right". Therefore I conclude that this constraint is perhaps only on MY
multikeyer (and perhaps only with Writelog 10.28C), and maybe it'll show up
when I try to use Radio Left for something useful.

I just bought the keyer. If it's defective, the time to get it repaired or
replaced is soon thereafter. If I wait for a year to try the two-rig setup,
it'll surely be out of warranty.

Thanks,
Dick, K6KR
