Can I use a shielded twisted pair with a standard Ethernet card or does It
need special connectors?  It looks like the standard connector on the
Ethernet card has a few wipers to connect to a shielded connector.

FWIW - I have been using unshielded cable at my station in Barbados without
any apparent problems for some time.  I am using a simple crossover cable to
connect my laptop to a PC both running Writelog.  The station is cabling
intensive (web pictures at tgeorgens.home.mindspring.com/op2002.htm) and
does not have a good ground.  In the last contest, CQWW CW, I could see the
rear of one of the PC's.  Every time I transmitted on 10 and 15, the
activity light would flash on the NIC card with no apparent effects.
Evidently, there is RF in the cable but the various error correcting schemes
in the protocol must dramatically reduce the impact.   I will add, however,
that I never went an entire weekend without Writelog/Win 98 crashing at
least once.  Although I don't have any reason to believe that RFI over the
Ethernet is a problem, I would just like to make things more robust.

Same here - everything routed essentially together, networked computers, KW
amp, RTTY contesting, Linksys hub, Linksys Wireless Access Point, unshielded
twisted pair, printserver, no TVI, satellite internet, whole family can surf
(some wirelessly) during networked contesting (WRITELOG).  Doesn't seem like
there's a problem - overkill if you like, but it sure doesn't seem
necessary.
