[WriteLog] what did I do wrong?

My educated guess, John, is that you used the wrong template.  WriteLog has
two templates for ARRL DX;  ARRL DX and ARRL DX.  (outside W/VE)  The DX
side template should only accept US states for the QTH field.  :) -- Frank
