Last night during the Spartan Sprint I used my IC-703 for the first time
with Writelog. Writelog could communicate with the rig, but seemed VERY
slow in responding, especially to frequency/band changes on the rig. It
also had a tendency to disable the narrow cw filter when I commanded it
to a new frequency via the callsign entry on the logging window.

Any similar observations, thoughts, or suggestions?

The problem was that both the rig and Writelog were set to "Auto" for
baud rate. Once I changed both to 4800 baud, everything now seems to
work fine. I suspect the problem would also have been solved with only
one or the other left set to "Auto", but I didn't test that.

Thanks to Jamie NS3T for the tips that led to this solution.
